Recently the FCC which regulates Internet providers has proposed new regulations that allow ISP’s to provide “fast lane” internet to companies that pay additional amounts to those willing to pay. Many people in the technology industry are up in arms about this issue as it may potentially slow innovation in new technology start-ups.
Net Neutrality refers to all internet traffic being treated equally. Without this principle, internet companies that transport data could potentially slow traffic from one source providing certain competitors with an advantage.
Neocities, one of the oldest and most prominent free web hosting companies has responded by slowing all traffic from the FCC to their websites to dial up speeds in protest. https://neocities.org/blog/the-fcc-is-now-rate-limited
Major technology giants such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, eBay, Facebook appear to be against the planned changes to Net Neutrality recently signing an open letter addressed to the FCC. This will be an interesting battle to watch, as the U.S like Australia has relatively few ISP’s, therefore stand to gain enormously without net neutrality laws.
